Their Story

Mike Cochran and Pedro Heller opened Black Dog in February of 2009 and it's already become the most talked-about restaurant in town through word of mouth alone. Mike's been smoking meat in his backyard since the mid-90s as a hobby, and over the years he developed some tasty results. In 2008, while Mike was working as a bartender at Esquire, he and Pedro, who co-owns Esquire, came up with the crazy idea of opening their own barbeque joint.

The restaurant is named after Mike's black mutts, Oscar and Lola, who were the most rambunctious pups in training class. Studies show that medium-sized black dogs tend to be the last dogs adopted at shelters, so at the front of the restaurant a flier is posted every month featuring a black dog looking for a home.

The restaurant itself is tiny, with about three feet of space between the bar and the booths, and the walls and ceiling are painted shades of orange and red to suggest the warmth of a fire. The lack of space combined with Black Dog's popularity, makes for a long wait during busy hours. Come early to get a seat, and even earlier if you want to try the burnt ends, which are made from the most tender part of the brisket - they usually sell out in two hours or less.
