Their Story

The Apple Dumplin' was opened in 1985 by Bob and Rita Wingler, a local couple who loved to cook meals from scratch and wanted to share their home recipes with the community.

The Winglers turned a wood-frame house on a rural stretch of High Cross Road in Urbana, into a hidden gem where you could order real mashed potatoes, gravy made from milk, hand-rolled noodles and homemade rolls and biscuits.

What started as a hobby to keep them busy during retirement, soon became a treasured meeting place for locals.

Farmers would hop off their tractors in the fields and come in for some beef n' noodles, families would stop in to enjoy a bucket of fried chicken, and the Winglers soon became good friends with every one of their regulars.

The future of The Apple Dumplin' was secured when 21-year-old Kathie Flaningam was hired as a waitress in 1991. Kathie became like a second daughter to the Winglers and eventually took over as manager. When Bob was about to pass away, he asked Kathie if she would buy the place and continue what had become much more than a restaurant.

For the past four years, Kathie and her husband, Jim, have owned the place, and they plan to pass the restaurant on to their daughter when they retire.

The menu items at the Apple Dumplin' vary by day — Thursday is meatloaf and Saturday is beef n' noodles — but you can always get their fried chicken, shrimp, salad bar and sandwiches. Breakfast is served daily until 11 a.m. and includes their famous biscuits & gravy, served with fried taters.

And be sure to try their famous Apple Dumpling - a whole apple, wrapped in pastry, baked with butter and cinnamon and severed a la mode.
